Black Bean-Oatmeal Burgers

(adapted from Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Caldwell Esselstyn)

1 15-oz can black beans, drained and rinsed

1 14.5-oz can tomatoes with zesty mild chilies

1 garlic clove, minced, or 1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

3 green onions, chopped

1 cup grated carrots

1 cup cilantro or parsley (opt)

3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Process first seven ingredients in a food processor until blended.  Add to oats and stir.  Let rest 10 minutes for oats to absorb liquid.  Form into patties on a baking sheet, and bake for 8 minutes.  Turn oven up, turn patties over and broil about 2 more minutes, until tops are nicely browned.  Serve on a whole-grain burger bun with favorite condiments and veggies.
